Fashion Wears Its Heart On Its Sleeves With the Red Dress Collection

NEW YORK, Feb 2, 2008 / FW/ — Now on its sixth year at the tents, The Heart Truth: The Red Dress Collection has become an institution. This year is special in the sense that Mercedes-Benz is back as the title sponsor. When The Heart Truth was launched at the tents in February 2003, Mercedes-Benz was also the primary sponsor of fashion week and one of the initial supporters of the Red Dress Collection.

This is also the second time that First Lady Laura Bush graced the tents for The Heart Truth. As the national spokesperson for the initiative, the First Lady had supported it through the years, but has not attended the catwalk show every year, perhaps because of the ‘security’ nightmare that the denizens of the tents have to go through every time a member of the First Family attends the season.

Liza MinnelliFor those not familiar with The Heart Truth, it is a national awareness campaign on women’s heart health sponsored by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI). Its primary message: Heart disease is not just a man’s disease - it’s the #1 killer of women.

The campaign pairs the message with an arresting visual - the Red Dress - as the national symbol for women and heart disease. And every year, different fashion designers create a ‘red dress’ specific for the campaign. Every year also, different models and celebrities walk the runway for the event.

Everyone who works for the project donate their time. Fashion wears its heart on its sleeves for the Red Dress Collection. And though most of the things that everyone hears about fashion are glitz and glamour, the truth is that fashionistas usually say yes for a good cause. They just cannot help themselves!

For this season, the real surprise is Liza Minnelli (photo above) who sang on the runway!!! How cool is that?
