A Dark Yet More Mature Erin Fetherston

Erin FetherstonNEW YORK, Feb 5, 2006/ FW/ — There’s a certain seriousness in Erin Fetherston’s Fall 2008 collection, Known for her fluid fairy tale silhouettes, Fetherston sent a predominantly black collection highlighted with earthy prints and shimmering fabric.

Entitled ‘Love Sprung’, it was inspired by a classic yet romantic love story, ‘Romeo & Juliet.’ That explains the glistening red and blue laces, signifying the tragic lovers.

Though this collection is not entirely a departure from Fetherston’s signature style of fluid silhouettes for fairy tale princess, the designer also showed maturity in her craft. Her ‘girl’ is no longer Cinderella (though the final exit, the bride looks like she came straight from a Hans Christian Anderson book); rather she is a city girl or a suburbanite sophisticate but has not lost all of her innocence.

Maybe, it is a sign of the times. There is weightiness in the atmosphere at the tents. With news of a recession, an unforgettable State of the Union Address from the President and the primaries in full swing, political or not, these issues also affects the fashionistas.

The change in Erin Fetherston is very subtle though. It is almost unnoticeable. Fetherston who debuted in New York via the UPS Hub several seasons ago was fresh from Paris, after showing off-calendar over there during the haute couture season.

She was already a good tailor then, her silhouettes were strong. For a season or two, it was almost touch and go, when she was proposing nothing new. But, this collection is different. It might be darker than what her fans are used to, yet it shows Fetherston’s growth.
