G-Star Raw Fall 2008: Combining Fashion & Poetry

Dennis HopperNEW YORK, Feb 7, 2008 / FW/ — With Dennis Hopper reading poetry as the finale of the show, G-Star made the runway a literary platform, a very refreshing uncommon use, considering all the political statements that had been made on the catwalk in the past and the present.

But, the poetry reading is not the only strong statement that G-Star made. With denim as the primary focus, the Amsterdam-based luxury jeans company also showed that denim is a versatile fabric that can be manipulated to show different proportions and volumes.

Paired with the traditionally elegant fabrics such as fine alpaca wool and delicate silk, the unexpected combinations raised the bar once again for true denim aficionados who only expect the best when it comes to their favorite jeans.

Opting for a palette of restrained dark navy, black; white and grey, offset with subtle shades of raw denim, G-Star juxtaposed volume with the correct fit, creating an interesting silhouette that is both edgy and avant-garde.

Case in point, the short-sleeved double-breasted coat and the windbreaker/raincoat. With elastic (garter) right around the upper thigh, the coat is also a blouson. But with the its mid-calf length, it is also a raincoat.

There is also a new hoodie that was introduced. Shaped like an astronaut’s helmet without the faceplate, it covers the head and the neckline, thus keeping the wearer warm and eliminating the use of a scarf.

Even the suit jacket was reworked. Given shoulder boards, this snug-fitting two-button jacket became hip all of a sudden. Though the silhouettes were not as innovative as the Spring 2008 collection, the use of exaggerated details and high-tech treatments of the fabric made this collection inventive.
