NEW YORK, Feb 15, 2008 / FW/ — The moment Wenlan Chai debuted in New York, she became an instant rising star and destined to be garment district’s Queen of Knitwear. Her Fall 2008 collection presented last week at Bryant Park proved once again that when it comes to knitwear, Wenlan Chai is an artisan.
Opting for a very neutral color palette of black and gray, Wenlan Chai peppered the collection with bright blues and yellows to ward away the winter blues. Yet, though the color choices are very somber, the collection is very upbeat with Wenlan’s novel vision on how to wear knitwear.
The basic sweater dress was reworked to be sleeveless and bareback. Cinched at the waist with a tiny belt, it was then paired with a floor-length skirt that made it a bit more formal, though it’s not really eveningwear. The cardigan was also reworked, making the sleeves shorter and the hemline longer, so it worked as a coat rather than a cardigan.
The collection is not just about knitwear though, as had always been the case for the past several seasons. Wenlan Chai also mini shirt dresses with bubble skirts and Capri-length pants paired with knitted sweaters. She even proposed a double-breasted pea coat that has knitted short sleeves.
Very young, easy-to-wear yet very avant-garde, Twinkle by Wenlan continues to be a shining star.
