Yohji Yamamoto Hits A Trifecta for Fall 2008

Yohji YamamotoPARIS, Feb 28, 2008 / FW/ — Yohji Yamamoto hits a trifecta and that’s after his very successful Y-3 catwalk show in New York. The Japanese designer who is a great at multi-tasking (1) will personally direct and present a fashion show in Beijing on April 24 of his Y’s collection; (2) is collaborating with Hermes to create a new signature sac for the French fashion house; and (3) just broke new grounds in fashion with his Fall 2008 collection presented Tuesday here in Paris.

The news about the Beijing fashion show hit the airwaves before Paris Fashion Week started. According to reports, the Japanese designer is going to design approximately 60 looks for his show in Beijing, with each garment unique and one of a kind.

As part of a UNESCO initiative, the event is being organized jointly with the Chinese People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries (CPAFFC) and marks the first time CPAFFC will present a fashion show with a foreign, privately held, fashion house.

Two days after the fashion show, the collection will be auctioned off at the Beijing Hotel to raise funds for the newly created Yohji Yamamoto Fund for Peace, whose aim is to foster creativity amongst China’s upcoming generation of fashion designers, and has been developed under CPAFFC. As part of the Yohji Yamamoto Fund for Peace, the organization will sponsor a winning Chinese designer to participate in a two-year continuing education program at a fashion school in Japan or in Europe.

At the same time, the foundation will also sponsor a female Chinese model selected from the annual competition to make her debut during Paris Fashion Week.

Spearing of Paris Fashion Week, Yohji Yamamoto unveiled both his eponymous collection and also a new Hermes bag on the runway last Tuesday. The bag, created in collaboration with the French fashion house features Yohji’s sleek lines, without any embellishment.

The bag is available in three sizes - 35, 38 and 41 centimeters and retails between 4100 euros to 4700 euros. The bag is available by special order only at the Hermes store at rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré in Paris and the Ginza in Tokyo. In the U.S., it can be ordered at the Madison and Wall Street Hermes locations in New York; and Bond Street in London.

Rounding the trio of achievements this season alone is the Yohji Yamamoto Fall 2008 collection, a true groundbreaking collection that used rawhide skins.
