NYFW Men: Matiere Spring 2016

Matiere MS16 (1)Los Angeles-based contemporary menswear label Matiere unveiled its Spring/Summer 2016 collection titled “Textured Modernism” during New York Fashion Week: Men’s on 13 July 2015.

This season, Matiere embraces the concept of duality through the use of unexpected materials on modern silhouettes, creating a collection that is both familiar and conceptual. Together the textural fabrics and technical details harmonize to form a contemporary collection of comfort and function.

The brand’s sophisticated fabric selection features both sleek surfaces and touch me textiles that reflect the idea of textured modernism. Clean, technical nylons infused with pattern and dimension join cotton jersey and wicking pique for an updated active influence.

A luxury lounge grouping consists of dense cotton slub, brushed cashmere, and 3D striped French terry. “We handpick all the fabrication to ensure that the quality and inspiration is there,” says Matiere founder Scot Schandalove.

“This collection features some heavy textures that maintain an effortless and clean finish. The color palette, which starts off with a creamy offwhite and builds to a true indigo, is reminiscent of the ocean’s raw beauty.”

Matiere MS16 (4)Offwhite, dusted grey and city black ground the collection with hues of bleached and true indigo forming almost a capsule within. True indigo is drained of its color to leave only its faintest remains, which was then created into modal jersey tees and woven chambray shirts as well as a selection of knitwear that is sure to stun.

Outerwear was also a significant focus with reworked bomber jackets and anoraks providing seasonal layering options. Additional silhouettes include baseball shirts, gussetted pants and the continuation of the brand’s loved Henley tank top.

“Finding a balance is key,” says Creative Director Jake Zeitlin. “We’re creating a collection that is fashion forward, yet always approachable and wearable.”

But for this season, it’s also all about the details. Laser cut pockets and collarless necklines speak to the collection’s sense of modernism, while split hems and hilo silhouettes reflect its streetwise spirit. Matiere S/S 16 offers an inviting dichotomy that both innovates and excites.
