Supima Design Competition S16: Kate McKenna of SCAD

Supima Design Competition - Runway - Spring 2016 New York Fashion Week: The ShowsHailing from Point Pleasant, New Jersey, Kate McKenna was dressing herself at the age of 5. Having always been an artistic and creatively driven child, she expressed herself in many ways, including fashion.

After being completely captivated by the dressmaking scene in Sleeping Beauty, she was hooked on the idea of making dresses.

McKenna’s area of design focuses on women’s eveningwear, ready-to-wear and bridal. With the ultimate goal of having her own label, McKenna wants the experience of working for a desing house as a technical or concept designer. She feels that fabrication is the most important part of her design process. “I design with a narrative,” McKenna says. “There’s always a reason or inspiration for silhouttes and details. I like to tell stories through my designs.”

Commenting on her entry collection to the Supima Design Competition, Kate McKenna said:

“West African and Haitian voodoo in the deep south, with a focus on traditional indigo dying and basket weaving.”
