The post–Labor Day moratorium on white clothing and accessories has long ranked among etiquette hard-liners’ most sacred rules. And in a span of two weeks, two high profile fashionistas just broke this rule.
Latest rule breaker is Laverne Cox who dared wear a Calvin Klein Collection white silk crepe double cut-out dress with slits at the after-parties following the Emmy Awards in Los Angeles. She did not raise any eyebrows though. In fact, she turned heads as the “Orange is the New Black Star” flaunted her sexy figure.
Last week in New York, during fashion week, supermodel Irina Shayk broke the no-white-after-Labor-Day rule by wearing a white silk cady Versace suit when she attended the Madison Square Park Conservancy’s Fall Fundraising Gala on September 9, 2015.
Where did that rule come from anyway? No one really knows the answer. Some says that it is for practical reasons; some says it is symbolic. One thing is sure though. The rule has relaxed even before the turn of the 21st century.
If we can wear black during springtime which was a no no for a long time and still raise eyebrows up to today, we can definitely wear white after Labor Day.
