Karen Dang knew she wanted to be a fashion designer since the age of 9 when she was captivated by the glamorous dresses that celebrities wore on the red carpet. After taking sewing classes in high school, Dang took a pre-college summer program at AAU that cemented her future in fashion design.
Inspired by the links of Alber Elbaz and Donna Karan, Dang says that her ambition is to become a creative director and work at Christopher Kane. With an avant-garde approach to design, she is not afraid to use colors to set the tone of her collections.
Commenting on her entry collection for the Supima design competition, Karen Dang said:
“I wanted to capture the controlled chaos and beauty seen in the works of Martin Klimas and Ori Gersht. My collection is inspired by Klimas’ series, “FlowerVases” and Gersht’s “On Reflection”, capturing the events that take place with the explosion of flower and vase. My first look is more structured like the vase and the last look is free and crazy, capturing the image of the shattered flower.”
